Many people have been asking me what the karma system exactly is. So let me break it down for you:
In order to be elligible for karma, you must register an account. For submitting a comment in a post, a user gets points:
+3 points for the first comment
+2 points for the second comment
+1 point for the third comment
+0 for anything else
Administrators (those who are capable of posting news on the main page -- a select few) do not receive karma points in the conventional sense and cannot be in the top ten (unless they create a separate account), but they do get 3 karma points to distribute per week which they can use to raise a user's rating (in the case they post an insightful or humorous comment) or lower a user's rating (in case they post something incredibly stupid). This system was originally designed to encourage people to post comments, but it also seems to promote stupidity. Oh well.
The people with the top 10 scores appear on the left. It is really easy to get in the top 10, and I encourage you to post now. Or else! (Unless you're an administrator, then nobody cares about you.)
Note to administrators: to increase/decrease a user's karma, click the thumbs up/thumbs down icon next to their name in the comments list on a news post. Remember, the karma system is totally anonymous, so feel free to exercise your opinions without feeling any reprocussions. Muahha!
